I xc skied near Fawn Pass today, and the snowpack in that area is still quite weak. We experienced multiple loud collapses, and the only resistance when probing the snowpack is a 2-3mm ice crust that I believe formed during a freezing rain event on 12/20. I am not sure how widespread this layer is, but there was a noticeable crust of ice on my car north of West Yellowstone the morning of 12/20. Where the crust is thin, it is fairly easy to throw a ski pole to the ground.
